EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED IN A TAXI

  • Fare Calculation Device (Meter): A compliant meter is essential for calculating fares and must be clearly visible to passengers.
  • Security Camera System: Taxis must be equipped with a properly fitted, approved security camera system that is in working order. This includes displaying signs inside and outside the vehicle to indicate video surveillance. The camera system components shall be installed in such a manner that the entire system is resistant to vandalism and/or degradation of the recorded image through intentional or accidental damage
  • Duress Alarm System: If a taxi provides services in metropolitan areas, it must be fitted with a compliant duress alarm system
  • Vehicle Tracking Device: If a taxi provides services in metropolitan areas must have a compliant vehicle tracking device.
  • Taxi Fare Hotline Stickers: At least one sticker must be displayed on the outside of the vehicle and one inside, clearly visible to passengers.
  • Roof Lights: Taxis need a roof light that is lit when available for hire and off when unavailable and visible to a person 40m away. It should in black writing and 70mm high.
  • Signage: Taxis must display prominent livery and signage, including the booking service’s name or logo.
  • Taxi Plates: Taxis need to display taxi plates issued by the relevant authorities.
  • Identification Cards: Drivers must have a driver identity document, and the taxi must have a display device to show the document clearly to passengers.
  • Wheelchair Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible taxis may have specific requirements, such as ramps or lifts.
  • Insurance : Make sure taxi has a 3rd party/ comprehensive property insurance cover
  • Accommodation : Make sure taxi has enough seating (minimum 4 passengers and not exceeding 11 passengers) and doors (at least 4 side doors)

Additional Notes:

  • Security camera systems must be tested and certified by an authorized person.
  • Taxi meters must be securely mounted in a position allowing a clear view for any passenger seat.
  • Some states or territories may have additional requirements, such as those related to seating capacity or door placement.
  • Taxis in South Australia must have six-monthly inspections to ensure they meet the required standards.
  • In Victoria, Australia tactile signs must be fitted next to taxi door handles for accessibility.
